Kindness a Free yet Valuable Gift

What drives a person or a family to leave their country with nothing more than the clothes on their backs and whatever they can fit in their pockets? What motivates a woman and a child to flee? One could argue that it stems from a courageous instinct for self-preservation or a profound love for someone other than oneself. It can be the result of an unfortunate natural disaster. In many cases, it is a quest for peace and prosperity in search of a place to call home. Such a decision is always a choice, but it is often made under very distinct circumstances. Sometimes, it is a calculated decision made without pressure, while other times, it is made under life-or-death conditions.

Many people who have come to the United States share stories of facing threats, extortion, forced recruitment, sexual violence, abuse, or persecution due to their race, religion, or nationality. Additionally, wars or natural disasters in their home countries have driven them to embark on their journeys.

Despite the hardships many of these individuals have faced in pursuing a better life—experiences that would break most of us—one thing they consistently display when receiving help is a deep sense of gratitude and appreciation.

Sr. Marie Chiodo, DW, shared an expression of gratitude that she recently received from a colleague, Yoicy, a Case Worker from the Navigator Program in the Newcomer Network for Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington. Sister has volunteered with Catholic Charities for many years, collecting, coordinating, and distributing donations to newcomers. The range of donations covers almost everything needed to establish a home and meet the needs of individuals or families. The communication was about a family who had immigrated from Honduras.

Yoicy wrote,  "Good morning, Sister Marie,

I hope this email finds you well. ... I am pleased to finally share the story of the mother and her family who benefited from the generous baby items you donated. ... The family, originally from Honduras, arrived in the United States last year. Shortly after their arrival, they discovered they were expecting a child. Little Jacob, as they named him, was born in January 2025.

Thanks to the Navigators program, we were able to remodel their living space, specifically creating a comfortable area for the baby. We provided essential items for the baby, as well as for the rest of the family. They have expressed immense gratitude for the support received.

Although the family has since been discharged from the program, they continue to express their sincere thanks. Their gratitude goes beyond material aid, as they are especially grateful for the emotional and spiritual support provided by our team and you, who have become a fundamental ally of this wonderful program.

Thank you again for your kindness and for being part of this transformative effort."

Kindness is a concept that includes many meanings. It is essential to acknowledge that kindness is important in all our actions. Sharing kindness is a free yet valuable gift.
