Celebrating the Gift of Star of the Sea

On December 2, 2024, Sisters gathered in thankful prayer for the final time at Star of the Sea, a cherished house in Belle Terre, NY, that sits high on a hill overlooking Port Jefferson Harbor, NY. The use of the residence, a precious gift from St. Charles Hospital that began in 1929, has been a sanctuary for retreats, vacations, meetings, and international gatherings for 95 years. Brimming with hospitality, it has hosted joyful and spirit-filled gatherings enjoyed by Sisters, their family members, Associates of Wisdom, and numerous groups connected with the Sisters. This gathering was no different, beginning with a breathtaking view from the living room window and one last chance to soak in the beauty of the surroundings, the boats gliding by, and the departure of the Port Jefferson Ferry in the harbor. After prayer, a time for reflection and gratefulness was followed by a waterfall of memories shared by the Sisters about the times spent there.

Special recognition was given to Sr. Pat Curreri, DW, also known as the mother and father of Star of the Sea. For over 20 years, she has been the cornerstone of the home, providing coordination for its use and ensuring its upkeep.

Sr. Pat, with a voice filled with emotion, shared, "My love for the home began when I first saw it as a young Sister. It reminded me of where I grew up in Broad Channel, NY. All I have done has been a labor of love."

The celebration concluded with two specially written songs by Sr. Ann Neilsen, DW. One titled "Ode to Star," sung to the tune of Home on the Range, reminisces about its location, its magical hospitality, and the festive gatherings spent there by the Sisters during the holidays. The other, "Thanks, Pat," sung to the tune of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," tells about the do-it-yourself skills of Sr. Pat when it came to household repairs and the seamless coordination of all it takes to welcome the visitors.
