Sr. Diane Capozzi, DW, Celebrates 60th Jubilee as a Daughter of Wisdom

Sr. Diane Capozzi (Sr. Barbara of the Immaculate Conception) is celebrating her 60th Jubilee this year. Born on February 13, 1944, in Brooklyn, New York, she was the second child of her parents, Anthony and Rose. Sr. Diane graduated from Our Lady of Wisdom Academy in Ozone Park, NY, in 1961. At entrance to the Daughters of Wisdom, her home parish was St. Clare in Rosedale, New York. Her First Profession of Vows was on August 2, 1963.

Sr. Diane said recently, while reflecting on the blessings of her 60 years as a Daughter of Wisdom: “What I am most grateful for is being part of an international congregation, with wide horizons, enriched by Wisdom Spirituality,”

Sr. Diane attended Seat of Wisdom College in Litchfield, Connecticut, from 1963 to 1969, receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. She attended Washington Theological Union in Washington, DC, from 1982 to 1984, receiving her MTS in Spirituality, and continued to minister at the “Union” as Director of Student Services (Dean of Students) for the next 12 years. From 1995 to 1997, Sr. Diane also attended Loyola College in Baltimore, Maryland, receiving her Master of Arts degree in Pastoral Counseling and becoming a nationally certified counselor. She received a CAS (Certificate of Advanced Studies) from Loyola College, majoring in Pastoral Counseling.

Sr. Diane’s ministry experience includes many intercultural connections, and she is very grateful for the years she was blessed in living abroad. “I just loved living in different cultures and being with the people. They become part of you, and you become a part of them.” she recalled, adding, “The world is so big; it opens up so many vistas.”

In 1966, Sr. Diane received her first assignment to St. Mary’s Elementary School in Norfolk, Virginia, where she remained until being asked to go to Malawi in 1969.   From 1969 to 1981, Sr. Diane taught in St. Mary’s Secondary School, served as school nurse, and utilized her skills in various ways on the National Education Examining Board. During these years, Sr. Diane served on the Provincial Leadership Team and was an integral part of the Formation Team and Community.

Upon completing her service in Washington, DC, Sr. Diane assumed responsibility as Director of the International Wisdom Year for the Daughters of Wisdom in Rome, Italy. During those six years, she also presented retreats and sessions in Italy, France, England, Ireland, Malawi, Madagascar, Canada, and the United States. Shortly after her return home, she was asked to serve on the General Council of the Congregation. So it was back to Rome for another four years! During these varied insertions, Sr. Diane was privileged to serve on various Leadership Teams in the U.S.

Now “home to stay,” Sr. Diane continues to engage in limited Spiritual Direction and serve the Entity however needed.

We extend our joyful blessings to Sr. Diane as she recalls with gratitude her many years of wonderful ministries and embracing Wisdom Spirituality over the past 60 years!
