Daughters of Wisdom Award $7,500 Grant to Harmony Health Care of Long Island for Baby Care Boxes

The Daughters of Wisdom has awarded a $7,500 Wisdom Fund Grant to Harmony Health Care of Long Island (HHLI) to support its Perinatal & Infant Community Health Collaborative (PICHC), specifically with baby care boxes for expectant mothers. Within Nassau County, HHLI assists women with care for their newborn babies and works to reduce infant mortality rates. With health centers in Hempstead, Elmont, Westbury, Freeport, Oceanside, and Roosevelt, HHLI provides quality, affordable health care to everyone in the community, regardless of health insurance or ability to pay.

On December 12, the PICHC Program distributed the first set of baby care boxes, known as Baby Bundles, to expectant mothers with the help of donations from Daughters of Wisdom and Baby Essentials of Long Island- BELI. Harmony Healthcare’s clients were gifted a bathtub, diapers, clothing, a pack-and-play and other baby essentials to welcome their bundles of joy.

“This is one small effort to help improve the health of new moms and their babies and help them be on a safer journey. We take care of thousands of people here every year, and about 500 women give birth in our care. This is just a way for us to start. Thanks to the donation from The Daughters of Wisdom, we are going to keep this going for as long as we can,” said David Nemiroff, LCSW, President & CEO of Harmony Healthcare, during the event presenting the baby care boxes. He added, “Thanks to the public’s support, we will. Thanks to donations from Baby Essentials, from Northwell Health, from Nassau County...we have a plethora of partners, because it takes a village to support one other. We’re just happy that you’re here with us, that we can support our new moms with this symbolic gesture for the first five that we’re awarding this too, but our hope is to donate to and support all 500 women every year who give birth in our care.”

This grant was endorsed by Sr. Evelyn Lamoureux, DW, a Board Member of Harmony Healthcare. “I’m so proud to be a member of the board of Harmony Health, and a founding board member. I worked really hard in the community of Elmont to bring this about, and to try to bring this about in the wider community,” Sr. Evelyn said during the December 12 event, which took place at Harmony Healthcare in Hempstead. “The Daughters of Wisdom joined with Harmony Healthcare today to work for the common good, that reflects the true Spirit of Wisdom, and that is a Spirit intelligent, holy, and loving the good. We join Harmony Healthcare to provide access to equitable, comprehensive, optimal healthcare by improving the overall wellness of all individuals and delivering high-quality comprehensive, patient-centered care. We have contributed funds to support the purchase of the baby boxes which you see here, which we are distributing.” Then, speaking to the expectant mothers who were receiving the baby care boxes, Sr. Evelyn continued, “The baby box will provide the necessities that will give you a head start for a healthy life, and we want you to be assured of the prayers of the Daughters of Wisdom for a healthy baby and a healthy life for you and your children.”
