Remembering Sr. Camille Solis, DW
October 20, 1946 – March 28, 2022
Profession: October 7, 2000
Friends of the Daughters of Wisdom, we are saddened to report the passing of Sr. Camille Solis, DW. Sister was 75 years old and 21 years professed. She went home to God peacefully on March 28, 2022, surrounded by loving staff, sisters, and family at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Convent, Sound Beach, NY.
Sister Camille was called to religious life in an unconventional way. After having received an annulment, she entered the Daughters of Wisdom on March 25, 1997, and made her final profession of vows on October 1, 2005 at the Church of St. Mary in East Islip, NY.
At the time, Sr. Camille reflected on that moment in her life, commenting, “It is through the very fine example of the sisters that came before me that I find my inspiration. It is through the fine example of all the people that I have ministered with that helps me to live out my vows authentically. It is through witnessing their fidelity to family, church and each other that I model my commitment to the Daughters of Wisdom and to God’s people...so as I continue the rest of my life, I pray for the grace to live out these promises to God, and I am most aware that Wisdom has kept Her promise to me.”
Born in East Harlem to Nicholas and Winnie Petrone, Camille earned her nursing degree in 1965 and married at the age of 20. She raised her son, Robert and her daughter, Lisa in Ozone Park, Queens. It was during those years in the parish of St. Mary Gate of Heaven, she met the Daughters of Wisdom while serving as catechist and Eucharist Minister and coordinating the baptismal program. Introduced to Wisdom spirituality, she became an Associate of Wisdom and discerned her call to vowed religious life. Her first ministry was serving as a nurse at Maryhaven Center of Hope in Port Jefferson. At the urging of one of her sisters in community, she applied for the position of Coordinator of Parish Social Ministry at the Church of St. Mary in East Islip. Sr. Camille served in this position for approximately 18 years. In addition, Sr. Camille wrote a weekly column for the bulletin entitled “Dear All of You” offering reflections on experiencing God in everyday life. She participated in the Daughters of Wisdom ministry of spirituality by writing reflections for “Fire In Our Hearts” and giving presentations at various Long Island parishes. Sr. Camille had the opportunity to spend time in Bangalore, India at Asha Deep, our residence for abandoned girls.
Sr. Camille always said she was so very blessed to have raised her wonderful children, Robert Solis (Julie) and Lisa Solis Acevedo (Louis), and to be the proud grandmother to four granddaughters, Marra, Nicole, Stephanie, and Olivia; and two great-granddaughters, Gianna and Navy while balancing her life and ministry as a Daughter of Wisdom. She will be greatly missed by them, as well as, by the Daughters of Wisdom and her many friends.
