Sr Teresa de Jesus SEPA 7 2020.jpg

That's the perfect sign for Sr. Teresa de Jesus Agular Avila, DW, who's featured on the homepage of SEPA Mujer's website and was recently recognized by them as Volunteer of the Month. Sr. Teresa was given the honor for her work on the Census Team. As a phone bank volunteer, her calls resulted in reaching over 120 people in three weeks. Sister attends meetings with SEPA Mujer's Huntington Station, NY, women's organization, and has been active in campaigns to address issues surrounding access to language, fair wages, immigration, and driving. Her community outreach efforts to raise awareness about access to driver's licenses attracted over 150 Huntington Station residents to a forum. SEPA Mujer wrote it was "something never seen before."

Established in 1993, SEPA Mujer, Inc., based in Patchogue, NY, is a non-profit organization supporting immigrant women on Long Island. The organization works with individuals to provide access to opportunities and services and partner with other organizations to advocate for immigrant rights, civil rights, domestic violence, and other injustices.

Sr. Teresa left the Daughters of Wisdom in Colombia in April 2016 to temporarily join the United States Province's intercultural Community in Huntington Station. Having a rich history of missionary experience in Colombia, Brazil, and Ecuador, Sister has become an invaluable community member in service to the growing Latino population primarily through St. Hugh of Lincoln Church. There she established an adult literacy program in Spanish and joined in the movement of evangelization, "Quinto Encuentro."

Congratulations, Sr. Teresa!
