Sr. Jane Elizabeth “Robert” Hogan, DW, 95, Sr. Robert of the Trinity, 11/07/24 – 4/20/20, 68 Years Professed

Friends of Wisdom, we are saddened to announce the passing of Sr. Robert Hogan, who entered peacefully into eternal life on April 20, 2020, at Maria Regina Residence in Brentwood, NY. Sr. Robert’s burial will be private, and a Memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date.

Jane Elizabeth Hogan was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 7, 1924, to Morgan J. and Catherine Archbold Hogan. She attended Prospect Heights High School in Brooklyn, NY, earning a regents diploma in 1943. After graduation, she worked for seven years in the accounting department at New York Telephone, also in Brooklyn, utilizing state-of-the-art IBM Machines.

In 1950, she began Religious Formation Studies in Litchfield, Connecticut, and made her first profession on February 2, 1952. After the novitiate, Sister Robert, as she became known, traveled to Niort, France, to work and study at Georges Renon Hospital. There, she attended Nurses Training School and worked in the operating room as an assistant anesthesiologist. After earning her nursing certification in 1959, Sr. Robert served as a Registered Nurse in the Medical Ward of the hospital for a year, before returning to Long Island to become an Assistant Nurse in the Obstetrics department of Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, New York.

After a year in New York, Sr. Robert again traveled abroad to England, to further her studies at Preston Royal Infirmary in Preston, England, earning a second Registered Nurse certification in 1962. She went on to Midwifery Training School at Queen Victoria Hospital in Blackpool, England, earning a diploma in Midwifery in 1963, as well as a District Nursing diploma from the National Health Service in London, in 1964.

Following graduation, Sister Robert was called to put her newly earned skills to work in Africa as a registered nurse in the Surgical and Medical wards at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Nguludi, Malawi. She remained there for one year, followed by nine years at the Pirimiti Mission in Malawi, where she was the Directress of Maternity, Pre-Natal, Post-Natal and Baby Clinics. After ten years in Africa, Sister returned to the U.S. in 1974, and was a private duty nurse for a year.

From 1978-1982, Sr. Robert cared for elderly Sisters at Mary Immaculate Convent in Litchfield, CT and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Convent in Sound Beach, NY. In the middle of those ministries, she was once again called abroad, serving three months as a volunteer in a Cambodian Refugee Camp in Sakeo, Thailand.

Sister Robert entered into retirement in 1982 and, after relocating several times throughout New York, in 1989 she settled into long term residence at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Convent in Sound Beach, NY, where she remained in community until her recent relocation to Maria Regina in Brentwood, NY.

Sister Robert is fondly remembered as a gifted nurse, caregiver and healer, a worldwide traveler who made a significant difference in the many communities in which she served. She is also remembered for her affinity for chocolate, often requesting chocolate cake and chocolate ice cream on special occasions!

Let us lovingly celebrate our dear Sister Robert, as she enters her new life in Heaven, surrounded by the heavenly angels and loved ones that have passed before her.
